The first Rattler was more of a dead on clone even using the original OpAmp the LM308. It was only used on the Big Box Rat and for a year in the enclosure still used today on the Rat ll . They only made about 500 original chip Rat pedals. What you have head used by 99% of classic recordings is a Rat ll
A brand new Rat ll is identical to the first. There are no secret Rat lll dumbed down rats. You want that perfect proCo Rat sound then just buy a new one. I digress. The new Jam uses their own OpAmp, not am LM308 or the Rat ll OpAmp.
The layout is Volume, Tone and Level. A second footswitch kicks
in a mid boost and a toggle lets you go from real Rat tube like asymmetrical distortion, to Tube Screamer like symmetrical distortion.
CONCLUSION___
The ProCo Rat virtually defined the hardclipper category
of distortion pedal. The Jam is indeed a hardclipper
and a very, very good one. In my opinion it is 100%
