UNIVERSAL AUDIO
UAFX ORION Tape Echo
UA has had a plug-in for years of this that is on thousands more recordings than the original Maestro EchoPlex ever was. That plug-in is in the Orion.
In America in the 60's this was the echo effect of the gods. Yes there were other Delays from across the pond but they were unavailable and for literally 99% of all players never even heard of them. The first model used tubes in the preamp.
I owned that one back then. Oddly the classic is the second one introduced in 1970 that had transistors. Especially odd since in this case tubes were not the winner. The Pre sounds so good that many companies now offer it in a boost pedal. The Xotic Effects EP Booster was a total must have best seller when it arrived.

HOW IT WORKS
To over simplify one played into the unit and it recorded your guitar on a tape head and played it back another.
You could physically move the playback head with a lever. The further you
moved the longer the gap and delay was between repeats.
The secret sauce was because of a flaw. The tape would stretch
over time and the wow and flutter between the slightly uneven spin of the tape passing thru caused it to modulate the sound. The sound is warm and rich and very full yet it enhances the guitar sound unlike modern digital delays it does not compete or in many cases makes the guitar secondary to the effect. in short it never has the tail wagging the dog.

THE LAYOUT
....is Delay, the space between repeats, Mix , the balance between the level of your guitar is in relation to the how loud the echo is, Feedback is the number of repeats,  Wonk is to simulate the tape wow and flutter and its stretching, or if you like...how much modulation it makes. Rec Level
is the level of the input on the PreAmp, more causes a very sweet rich distortion.

CONCLUSION
Just buy one!!! I love mine!!!

....go to 7:30
