Until recently I thought of the two classic pedals the Rat and the BOSS DS-1 Distortion as 2 very different things because like most guys I feel they sound very different quite simply because they do. BIG BUT. The BOSS is a modified Rat. The human ear is scientifically 10 times more sensitive to differences than the human eye. In short the DOD 250 has a strong particular character that has made a preference to even a few major players for decades simply because its subtle but importance differences. In other words the Mosky and DemonFX are nice enough hardclipper distortions but they are not a DOD. So if I went for that sound I would want the DOD, especially as it is not crazy money at $90 and there are used as cheap as $45.
