                VARIAC FUZZ 

Basically it starts with Band Of Gypsys Fuzz which is an Octavia minus the octave. The variac is a b.s.name for BIAS control. It cuts the voltage down and gives you more distortion by starving the circuit. Controllable malfunction, lol.

The layout is Tone, Gain and Volume. The Variac controls the input voltage.

CONCLUSION ___

Except for recent attempts to control heat and line input into a fuzz there has not been anything new with a Fuzz in 40+ years. If you like what you hear it is application that points the direction. Some fuzz pedals are more OD like with a predictable and stable sound. Other old school Fuzz pedals are erratic  and dictate even what your touch must be to get anything ,dare I say, musical out of them. 

MXR for the most part go for a Fuzz with OD like response. 

They could have painted black with a Gothic name and sold it as a Metal OD. It is a very useful noise. With voltage pulled all the way back it cause the sound to gate. Great for busy playing as it tightens the sound really well.
