Robben Ford not only thought the 2004 Hermida Zen Drive sounded like hisDumble amp but since he travelled without an amp just a guitar and a few pedals the Zen Drive took it's place. It still does. He does a lot of writing on the road. He has often found that once in the studio it has become pointless to not simply use the pedal than piss around for hours only to get some amp to duplicate the pedal.
The Z-drive is NOT some great clone it is simply made by using the same
parts as a Zen Drive. Calling it a reproduction seems a better description.
A real Zen Drive does not use rare old parts and never did. They are readily available cheap but dependable industrial parts.
I bought mine in June for $30.00 USD with free shipping.
Last but not least once you have a Z-drive you have a Dumble sound covered. There is no need to buy the obscenely priced Dumble pedals made by anyone.

Great sounding pedal. I bought one on your rec and it’s lived up to your praise. I’ll add that your “dollar value” ethos for effects pedals and all guitar gear is a well thought out strategy for the working musician. Thanks Paul and all the best in 2025
ReplyDeleteHappy new year Paul!
ReplyDeleteTHANX guys!!! What I do I put in 4 to 6 hours every day but I like to think it does some good :-) As an old guy of 78 on a small pension and the odd gig with barely enough to rent a truck to get there. I have to budget. I will not use gear that does not sound pro. Sometimes I have to save for a pricey piece but sometimes a cheap pedal simply sounds pro. The site is all about Pro sound no matter what the price but Pro does not have to cost a lot at least half the time. With patience a whole board can be both Pro and cheap. That said if a pricey pedal totally nails it for you, then splurge.
ReplyDeleteYour site is so useful! There are many pro and cheap pedals, but there are also cheap pedals that sound bad. Have you heard about Irin pedals. Are there any of them that could be used in a Pro context?
ReplyDeleteYes the Irin Instrument Band Controller. It is a 10 band EQ. I paid $25 with free shipping. With a Graphic EQ each band graphically is shaped like a mountain with a rounded top. Think of the 10 bands as a row of triangles that each overlap. Where they overlap they cause phase cancelation which is a smearing of the signal. Smearing is babblegab for mud. The best ones are made by HiFi consumer companies for stereos to listen to recorded music. The Irin is a highly likely made by buying the guts pre-made on a board from such a company that makes consumer entertainment equipment parts. They make thousands and thousands as it is for products for the general public so they can make it cheap. I often see stompbox EQ casings that do not match in any way the brands other pedals. I am sure it is why it happens. If the Brand made its own it would be obscenely expensive. So yo get to the point. The Irin I am sure has very high specs. Specs better than the brand name pedals for sure. I set mine up and never change it to get the kind of scoop that a Fender Twin Reverb has to make my Marshall have a Fender vibe when I want dead clean sounds for flatpicking. in fact I have a mooer 5 band beside it that I use more of an EQ boost for all other things. As for the other Irin product i bought few years ago. For a start they had no output. The bypass was louder than the pedals. One only lasted a few weeks and died and they were all noisy.
ReplyDeleteI totally doubt the EQ was even made at the same factory and it can probably found branded with other names.
Thanks !
