This is nothing new in fact the oldest pedal on the market to tackle this sound is the Earthquaker Devices Acapulco Gold. The D-Sound is a knock off of this pedal. There are at least a dozen other takes on the iconic Sunn Model T amp. One even claims to have produced the amps original preamp and put it in their pedal.

The amp was critical in creating all the original Doom Metal bands. These days very few bands take on a small corner of Metal to explore. They have an eclectic mix of styles.

It is natural thing for any style to evolve or indeed create something new. Such being the case it certainly makes sense to me to perhaps get such a pedal without all the bells and whistles and add it to ones mix of Fuzz and OD's on their board.

The Sunny has just a volume knob. It is meant to use in a classic Fuzz style by getting the tones from your guitar tone and volume control
