The MXR Custom Shop is more of the MXR re-issue, Limited Ed. dept. A hybrid is simply using both a silicon and a germanium transistor in the same circuit to get a sound that is gritty and warm mixed with one that is more punchy and defined. It was the sound of NYC Punk.
The basic circuit of this one is a Fuzz Face that they modified. The voice is fixed so the layout is volume and gain.
CONCLUSION
They did a good job of it. When pushed it has just a bit of a low BIAS sputter and spit, the silicon gives it enough definition so you can plays what you want not what the Fuzz dictates. It is a horse on the gallop but is easily controlled by the reigns. It is not however a Fuzz aficionados Fuzz where dynamics are affected by both the guitar volume and touch. It is for guys who need a Fuzz to act like an OD as in my case. I am a singer songwriter and a crazy Fuzz is only for solos or totally instrumentals passages.
