NEURAL AMP MODELING
NAM
Often referred to as NAM is a software format created by Steve Atkinson that allows one to capture or in effect take an analog sound like a guitars sound coming from a tube guitar amp and turn it into a digital format so you can put it into a DAW and play that sound as if you had the first device that did this in it's self contained hardware, the Kemper Profiler guitar amp. There are several stand alone Modelers that have different formats. However it is much like in the late 70's with synthesizers. The buyer became needlessly frustrated by finding that his expensive synth became redundant over night with each company bring out something better with new features etc. By adopting a universal MIDI format you cold keep your synth and indeed get another and the second doubled your possibilities by having both instead having one great one and the other becoming an expensive door stop.
Although NAM is a DIY for guys making their own sounds it has got so big over a very short time, that user groups are sharing free sounds and one can expect pro providers from the DAW industry will offer many very soon.
The only thing missing from NAM is a foot controller that can store and play your sounds.
But a laptop with a multi purpose switcher could do the job.
Perhaps we should use what Hollywood has been using for years. They use a Military grade laptop. They are meant to take abuse than we could use a basic switcher on the floor like the Xsonic Air Step smart multi controller.
If you already use a basic laptop and it works for your purpose you might get by live with an entry level $110.00 USD Airstep for foot switching. They are wireless so sitting an ordinary but robust stand it you should not have anymore serious accidents that you have with that fragile guitar you have which also doesn't survive to well falling to the floor.A total all bells and whistles Airstep teamed with a Military Laptop is under $2000. something with only what you need with a budget Military used/refurbished can be under $1000.
