MAD PROFESSOR
ROYAL BLUE OD 20th Anniversary
Designed by Bjorn who still designs for many companies. He took the Tube Screamer the 'wheel' of OD's and reinvented it a dozen times. Yes they do all sound a little different. Basically if one changes the clipping diodes to different values and adds an additional circuit in the form of some EQ you get a new sound.
Some ts 'me too' pedals are clever like the first one, the Boss SD-1 but most are just the same old bullsh@t. In fact all you get is a silly name, a lot of boasting so you will pay hundreds for a pedal that someone like Caline sell for $35.00 USD. The layout is volume, tone, bass, and treble
CONCLUSION
It was designed as variable gain one size fits all, even always on pedal for decades. Typically if a guy has a combo amp with a passable neutral sounding clean channel and plays usually a Blues influenced Rock where using the guitars volume to clean up the sound to a usable level to back a vocal. The key of it working well is that the pedal responses to your touch with appropriate dynamics.
THE VIDEOS ___The first is a demo and only video of the 20th An.Nothing is different than the name so I included2 older videos each showing the oppositespectrums of the pedal. The first treats thepedal as a low gain pedal and the second as
a high gain pedal.
I guess it a kind of modded Timmy
ReplyDeleteYes and no. The guy that designed this pedal is Bjorn Juhl who has been designing pedals since the 1980's and so for years everyone clones his designs. The Royal Blue came out in 2002 and the Timmy in 2007. Paul Cochrane started out as a hobbyist in the late 90's. So he would have had Bjorns pedals to learn from. Bjorns first best seller was the Dyna Red. Many say it was the first MIAB. It is still made. All of these pedals are just modded clones of Susuma Tamura's Tube Screamer from1979. The mods done by using different clipping diodes make the most notable differences. Second is using a different OpAmp and thirdly by simply using parts made by the many different manufacturers. Think of a simple black rubber car tire. They can all be argued to be very different. The Tube Screamer is that car tire. I think if you had a Tube Screamer and a graphic EQ you would get a damn close copy of any of these literally hundreds of Tube Screamer wannabes, lol. I have a couple of ts boxes I use but only as boost pedals. If I want a transparent vibe thing I prefer BluesBreaker pedals. Like everyone else I have not found the perfect transparent pedal. Especially for a Strat. The BB is good for HB guitars like my semi but not perfect for my Strat sounds. I would love to try the JCA Audio Texas Flood. It is German so with import, duties and shipping it is at least $300. If it did not work out it would be hard to sell and get half the money back. So ... ???? LOL.
