The most obvious thing is to use a booster is to overload the input on your amp or another pedal into distorting. It can be used like a buffer to increase the signal strength of long travel through long chords or a series of pedals as well. These days many boosts are really very low gain OD's that are useful to enrichen your signal by boosting the overtone and compressing the signal yet remain very, very, transparent.

The most popular OD on the planet is the Ibanez Tube Screamer. In spite of definitely having enough gain to be called an OD it is used by the majority of buyers as a booster.
