COMPRESSOR- WAMPLER Cory Wong: Compressor _____ NEW _____ more than

$270.00 USD
 WAMPLER CORY WONG: COMPRESSOR
It is a very specific tool Cory Wong is a major Go To session player for his rhythm guitar work. A big part of it is derived from the very best of classic Funk.
He also is big on a boost pedal so that is also part of this compressor. His favorite comp was the Wampler Ego so this pedal is hardly something new and unique.
The basic layout is Attack,Tone, Sustain, Volume,Blend and Boost.
CONCLUSION
I bought the Ego Comp. Comps can kill your attack and even sound muddy. I found the Ego gutless, muddy with zero attack. I sold it
after a painful month of trying to get it set to something usable.
If you are not a Fuzz, Distortion Plexi guy but more a Fender Strat
with a Fender old school amp Wamplers comps might work for you.

  1. so, what is a proper compressor in your opinion? Do you use any?

  2. As wise man once said a compressor is the OD for your clean. I have and use 4 in a single tune. The Keeley Compressor + ...it the compressor imitated for the 3 Wampler's. A Pigtronix Philosophers Tone an Optic Comp with warm germanium like warmth, a Taurus Servo that is more pre than compressor and a Caline Python with a the pre circuit from a old Neve pre in it.
On a guitar signal when you hit that first chord the signal goes very loud than fades off quickly then sustains then fades off slowly. Which means it goes thru 4 stages. A compressor simply automatically turns down the signal to a fixed amount. The more you turn it down than the more each stage is closer to the others in its loudness.
The different ways of doing this all have a different sound as do different makers. In short they contrary to myth none are totally transparent because they color the sound. It is hard to put such colors in words so it is easy to end up with trial and error.
The Keeley Compressor+ is the biggest seller by a very wide margin. I recommend it as it is improbable one would totally hate it no matter what genre they played in. I would not sell mine though the others are great but not necessarily unreplaceable.

  3. thx for taking the time to answer! I am still in the learning-phase, I guess. Had a Mooer Yellow Comp, but wasn't happy with how it changed the overall sound. The compressors built-into my Katana work fine, but I cannot put them in-front of an OD pedal obviously. Mosky Audio C4 or the Python would be me next iteration (to keep the financial investment reasonable). Is the 'Blend' knob a killer feature? not so many compressor have it ...

  4. A blend knob lets you add your non compressed sound to the compressed sound. Your non compressed attack when you hit a string gives it punch and definition. Your Mooer Yellow Comp is an Optic Compressor. It's a very good clone of the Diamond $325.000 CP-1.Used the Mooer for about 3 years until I got the Pigtronics.
Like I mentioned the best all around Comp is the Keeley Compressor Plus. It's $150.00 USD. If I could only have one Fuzz but it could not be some gourmet special I would get one.
If I could spend the money I would get the Origin Effects Cali 76 Stacked. At $420.00 USD, ouch. Like the Keeley it just sounds great no matter how you set it up. Others are better and for even the same money need a rocket scientist to help you get the right sound and moving one knob different you might get total crap. The Origin keeps your guitar sound in tact but just sweetens it a bit while making it fatter at the same time. It somehow does not sound compressed but like you by luck have the perfect guitar and amp rig.
Keep away from the Xotic SP. It is really popular and can do a lot. Big but ....it thins out you sound. I used it for a year.
