JHS PEDALS
KILT 10 Distortion⁕
The pedal stated life as a take on the Bionic Expandora which is
a pedal based off of combining two Rat pedals. The big change after 10 years is that the pedal now uses vintage
germanium clipping diodes. In the low gain setting you get very
bright and crisp OD sounds. With a dimed setting you get a killer
gated Fuzz.
CONCLUSION __Impressive. Fatter and with more usable low
gain tones. There many settings and at least
three are highly usable. Love it!!!

I don't know that JHS claims to use actual vintage germanium parts, isn't it "germanium voiced" or something like that?
ReplyDeleteImplying to me that it's likely not "actually" germanium but maybe carefully tuned silicon, or some such.
Personally I like silicon transistors in my fuzz boxes, so no problem there, I just found the wording of the promo copy (which I can't find today, strangely enough) to be a bit squirrelly.
Germanium transistors are pricy and in short supply but not germanium clipping diodes. The transistors are susceptible to too high heat but the diodes are tiny so on the whole they cool enough not to cut out. I have the $130.00 USD TOL Red Germanium Fuzz which beside the original $1400.00 USD Tone Bender 2 sound scary close. It has its bad days where it drops the volume but turning up the volume makes it usable. It is a small hassle to get the original sound.
