OVERDRIVE -JHS Overdrive Preamp ___NEW___ a take on the now defunct DOD 250

 JHS OVERDRIVE PREAMP
$180.00 USD
Ol' Josh got hold of two very, very rare first 1974 DOD Overdrive pedals. Circuit wise it is V.1 of
8 versions though the pedal world only refers to the 3 official versions. The V.1 had a second variation so JHS put in both with a switch to chose with.
The official second one in 1978 or V.2 is usually referred to as the 'Grey Box'. The 'Grey' is actually the most famous and the first one labeled as the DOD 250 preamp.  The craziest think is that DOD used used parts taken off of scrapped IBM boards. So no 2 even made on the same day were certain to be the same. This of course makes the claim that the old one is better beyond stupid, lol.

The final DOD 250 V.3 the 'Yellow Box' designed by Tom Cram in 2011 from scratch got discontinued as the parent company Samsung in 2018 closed the company because they thought it was not worth the trouble of running it because they could not charge the kind of profit margins they usually get for their phones etc. The story is complex and unpleasant as they simply fired everyone and locked the companies doors.
Tom Cram now has his own company Spiral making impressive OD's and Fuzz boxes.

Players have traditionally used it as primarily as a booster. Some with very little gain but others even flat out. So in application this is a rather versatile OD. I like it as a boost on an OD pedal or I use it behind a Fuzz to tighten the up spits, sputters and hash.

CONCLUSION
All 3 DOD 250 type pedals are very, very similar sounding.
Many players find they prefer the final DOD version over the 'Grey' one.
Because they are consistent and clearer. In short never a bit muddy.
Although the DOD 250 is in effect defunct the actual parts are not. They are both still made and not pricey. It is inevitable that clones will follow.

OTHER CLONES?
The NEW Mosky D250x uses the exact same parts. At $25.00 USD and with free shipping it was a nobrainer to get one. So to get to the point why not get the Mosky? From it you can decide if you find it all you need, dump it or get the JHS.

Compare the DOD 250 & MXR Distortion+ to the JHS .
Then compare the DOD & MXR to the Mosky
NOTE: The DOD was based their pedal on the MXR Distortion+ circuit.

  1. The king of overpriced clones returns with a true value sub $100 pedal for $230 in my country. There is nothing special about a clone. I can still find 250 reissues locally for sub $100. Paul you nailed it with the Mosky. Best bang for the buck. I find it interesting how the boards trash the clones to no extent ND thing they are all garbage but when JHS does it they think its a thing of gold. A clone is a clone. Doesn't matter where it is made.
