$150.00 USD used |
There are many reasons for this but I thing the underlying reason is a natural feeling of wanting to assert our personal identity. In short we all want out own identifiable sound, With a clean sound we are limited to a few hundred choices. With dirt pedals there is the very least a thousand. I have documented as many already.
On SBS I soon found that you guys are 6 times more likely to go to a dirt pedal Post than all other kinds of pedals put together.
When a designer is dealing with analog OD's there are only 4 basic methods of making one. You can use OpAmps 4 basic types of transistors and a few clipping diodes. In the last few years FET transistors have moved to the top because they are similar sounding to tubes. Firmly in second place are OpAmps which have since the Tube Screamer been on everyone's board. Every year you offered a new pedal that claims to have a miracle low gain 'transparent' pedal. It never fails to be another F.ing Tube Screamer. LOL Some are heading towards $400.00 USD from Japanese companies that many players discuss with hushed voices in reverand terms. Sorry guys ...it is merely a ts.
Fuzz pedals? The grandfather or the OD. You can make a good one with only 7 parts on the circuit board. To say there are hundreds that sell for rip off prices is understatement. The good news there great ones from China for as cheap as $20.00 USD. So trust my Post if I say a Fuzz that is that cheap is a killer.
THE JOE SATRIANI OD
Yes 12 years ago Vox made old Joe a 'high gain' dirt pedal. By today's standards it is a creamy smooth medium gain OD. The kind that now if renamed and sold for a silly price could be the next big deal with the 'Dumble' worshippers. LOL
The market is saturated with OD's. In order to try and get something fresh a few makers are offering 70's style 'hard clippers'. These are silicon transistor based OD's which started life as a Fuzz. Others are OpAmp miracle pedals which are Tube Screamers on steroids. The very best are dead cool. So ...why get a shiny new one for big bucks when the pinnacle of the craft is still available like this Vox!
I occasionally do pedals that from my 'early adopter' pedal collectector friends tell me about.
The current fave is the Danelectro Cool Cat Fuzz V.1 Check out the Post. A year ago they sold for $35.00 USD ...they are already hitting $200.00 USD. Guess what pedal is next???
Correct! So $150.00 USD
FINAL NOTE
It is well kept secret that the most popular and arguably the very best dirt pedals have one thing in the manufacturing process in common. When the circuit boards are finished they are laid out on tables in long rows. Sometimes this can be dozens and dozens of pedals. They are then left in the dark overnight. Keep in mind it must be very dark. In the morning they are installed in their cases, packaged and shipped.
WHY???
During the night the pedal fairy comes in and sprinkles them with fairy dust.
This of course costs hundreds of dollars in delays. It is why these pedals are
expensive. But it is worth every penny.
The value of such a pedal is beyond a price.
Here at SBS we ask you to please keep this a secret or there will be a run on
these priceless gems and soon all these pedals will cost more than an original
Klon.
