    CONCLUSION __ 

This time we do not get a sexy enclosure to tell our eyes what we are hearing, lol. It is dangerous for the makers when we judge with our ears.

MODELER- CHAOS AUDIO Stratus... what 2020 promised is here

Modelers are no longer any one thing or indeed technology. This one has just 

one knob and a screen. This is not new there have been even Lo-Fi gadgets for years but only know are a few things at least on the first step of a Pro product. The Stratus started in 2020 and got this look and a new launch 

a year ago. Today it gets 'more stuff'.

CONCLUSION __ 

On one hand I am impressed but on the other we see a challenger every few months. Worse of all they are not any more comparable then 3 cars when one is powered by petroleum, another electric and a 3rd is highbred. 

I have just ordered the Friedman IR-D Tube Pre-Amp. It has all the needed interface to use like a modeler with one that does not simulate but 'is' tubes for an amp sound. It does not cover the various effects that most modelers have either basic or in some cases heading to infinity.

I find that every year I do not get a modeler is a year that I need not

have because no matter what I pick, a year later I find myself saying, 

I should have waited. I escaped that B.S. for decades with amps 

by buying a Plexi in stead of the amp in fashion that came, then soon 

disappeared like last years cool t-shirt. My Plexi is like a plain 

white T and now I also have the Friedman that is a plain black T. 

I will only need the same 2 T-shirts for what appears to be

a very long time.

This is a Fuzzstortion or Fuzzy Drive.

A silicon transistor circuit that is meant to be primarily an overdrive but when the Gain is pushed it morphs into more Fuzz than high gain distortion.

The layout is simple with just Level and Texture a rotary switch

with 3 voices.

The company has a guy or two with skill,

imagination and above all 'Ears'. Every 

pedal they make just sounds killer. 

Voice 1 is worth the price of the pedal!

   CONCLUSION __

It is aimed at the guy who needs to cover any

kind of a tune at the gig and in a hurry. It is 

made to last forever.

It has all I would need, but so does the new Nobels DEL-mini. The$100.00 USD Nobels hasn't the EQ 

but if I had that I would only set it once and forget it. I had it on my J Rockett and all I did was cuts 

some highs. I pulled it for the UAFX Orion which doesn't have EQ. If I needed another Delay 

I would scoop the Nobels.

The goal was to nail the infamous Fender Deluxe 5E3. The layout could not be simpler. You have Gain and Output. 

                 CONCLUSION __  

Well like all but Fender amps they are very difficult to get right because unlike a Marshall which buries the sound of the amp you put it through, it blends. A blend means your ears hear a distinct 3rd thing. You can take a new era Fender amp and put a vintage Fender sound over top and usually get away with it. Because like ice-cream 2 different chocolate flavors are still chocolate. 

 

OVERDRIVE/PRE- TUBESTEADER Roy___NEW___ Vox AC30 Dream pedal ???

It is not hard to tell what these guys are all about. They make tube OD's. 

This is their 6th one. They use a single 12AX7 preamp tube for the second stage and overdrive it with a FET or two. They use a charge pump so in spite of running on a 12v adapter the tube gets some serious voltage. Some companies only use enough voltage to turn the tube into a flashlight bulb, lol. In short with some companies it is a gimmick rip off. 

The layout is Treble and Bass, but each channel has its own Volume. 

     CONCLUSION ___ 

The impressive thing is that the pedal is voiced to capture a Vox AC30 amp. Not an easy task but the pedal is in the ballpark. Or, to put it another way it will do a very good job subing for the real thing. What I really like about it is that many, many amps these days are too dark and this does more than mask it with EQ. It puts in the right overtones and harmonics in the highs so it adds some great stuff instead of just being a 

Band-Aid. Using burgandy red for the casing is a nice touch as it mimics 

the AC30 backplate and grillcloth.

MY MONTHLY RANT

It was a totally crap month!!! ...and if it wasn't... I wouldn't admit it!! The Black Friday deals sucked. They merely headlined with the things they have had on sale for weeks!! 3 years ago some things were 40 and even 50% off!!

THE GOOD NEWS 

I did it !!! I did it !!! I got a modeler ...well ...not really😟 ...but I got the Friedman IR-D a Plexi in a pedal that is all tubes, tubes, TUBES!!! 😎 I can not tell you how I did it but I got a full $200 off of  the price, hee, hee, hee!! NO!! I will keep my dear old amp, Mr. Plexi ...but like me he will be in semi-retirement.

FENDER HAMMERTONE FUZZ 

This fell between the cracks in 2022 when Fender brought a line of 9 pedals all at once. 
It became a blur of some pedals good, bad or indifferent. It is a clone of the Vahlbruch Octavia which is their take on the 1976 Roger Mayer Octave Fuzz. It is NOT the over the top Doom 

Metal Octave Fuzz. What you get is a seriously good every mans Fuzz for $80.00 USD.

 

 

NOBELS DEL-mini

It has tap tempo and your basic Digital, Analog and Tape voices but you can get some Star Wars things by holding the footswitch. It has many extras that are not obvious. It is very user friendly. 

The BIG DEAL is it is arguably Strymon quality of sound or at minimum in that league. For $100.00 USD  I was expecting a good pedal but NOT up market. It is a nobrainer choice. 

 

FRIEDMAN IR-D

It is 2 channel Marshall Pre in a pedal with tubes and all, except the damn thing can emulate a Modeler like circuit with  IR's to sub as speakers, it has an amp simulator, plus a touch of room reverb and even a Marshall 4x12 half stack simulated resonance, in short its famous 'Thump'.
