There are numerous pedals that clone the Echoplex. All have flaws
and you read 3 reviews the 3 reviewers will give you 3 different opinions.
The most obvious annoyance is that the MXR needs a separate switch to work the tap function.
I found in application the only thing that works for me is the classic generic echo where you leave a delay pedal with a succession of a few fast repeats pushed a bit into the background that sounds good against any tempo the band is playing. Or a single repeat that acts as a funky sounding reverb. Even a modest and usually inexpensive analog delay does this fairly well.
Sure you can do some sexy things with the delays tapped out to the songs tempo but that requires the whole band to follow your echo live!!! It just ain't going to happen! In U2 ..the Edge has the drummer follow a click track for the entire gig. Try that in your band LOL.
Yes again there are some cool ambient delay effects. They too require usually a clean sound and once again not only get lost in the mix live but turn your sound into a dog's breakfast. In short you do not need dozens of feature so if a pedal sounds great.
IT IS!
CONCLUSION
On several occasions good ol' Dave Friedman claims this is the killer of killer delay pedals. On one occasion he did a review of several of his fave delays. All the others were pricey digital delays which he found perfect for one kind of use or another but on killer guitars solos the MXR was the winner in his book. Dave claims it nails the EVH sound.
One thing I have learnt about all pedals. Playing the music one plays using the guitars and amp you use in the context you use it determines your best pedals.
This means expensive and cheap pedals. About the only thing it unwise to do is choose your pedal by features. The other thing is a single pedal that may even be killer seldom has more than one great sound.
Ol' Dave claims over and over that this bullet proof. WTF good enough for me!
I ordered one lol.
THE FINE PRINT
Well it came and it is the best
delay I ever bought. Dead simple to use
and it makes a dirt guitar sound killer.
I have had many delays including the big,
big bucks digital pedals.
Fine for trippy clean sound but this blows
then out of the water on a solo.
