FUZZ- CALINE Fuzzy Bear ...a classic original germanium transistor Fuzz Face ???

$30.00 USD
 CALINE FUZZY BEAR FUZZ
This Post is a re-write. thanks from a visitor with the user name MC. Check out the 'Comments'.

Yes it is the real deal. The original germanium Fuzzface at a bargain price.???
Maybe not. The Caline site does not say. But the online dealers say the 'Bear' is a germanium Fuzz Face clone.
I shouldn't be surprised as their Pure Sky is a clone of the $375.00 USD Vemuram Jan Ray. That said the general vibe going around is it is a Timmy. But another rumor says that the Jan Ray is a Timmy as well.
Evidently the 'Bear' has silicon transistors. BC549 ones to be exact! You will note the BC108 was the
transistor in the silicon version of the Fuzz Face so
is not in any way a real Fuzz Face.
However the Layout is the just like a Fuzz Face with Fuzz and volume. The volume needs to be near dimed and the Fuzz dimed to make a usable sound. Just like a Fuzz Face. The final fuzz Face had this layout and it 'was' a silicon Fuzz.
CONCLUSION
Well it is a great sounding Fuzz and it's cheap Hell it even looks cool. Actually it sounds very similar to a Colorsound Jumbo Tonebender. The Colorsound was v.4 of the Tonebenders and it used silicon transistors. Close enough for me to be happy with this Fuzz.

So if it sounds great ...and it does ...What's the problem.
Well germanium transistors are more dynamically sensitive to your touch. You can get a lot of subtle difference with your touch or by backing off your guitar volume. If you play a Strat backing off your guitar volume gives you that killer Hendrix clean sound with a lot of chime. I think I found the solution for getting a real germanium Fuzz.

A price of $25.00 USD with free shipping got my order! Problem solved!

HANDS ON
I am pretty sure it is indeed a silicon Fuzz. It however is good sounding. It is close enough to a Colorsound Jumbo Tonebender and to other silicon Fuzz Face pedals knockoffs to find it worthy of a place on a Pro pedal board.  It is definitely a one trick pony.
Like all pedalboards one has to draw of line as to what can be on it. Regular readers know I have 2 pedal boards linked together as one. I use 80 pedals LOL Seriously ...and live too. Even at that silly amount I too must have a limit.
So I picked the Rowin G-Fuzz over the Caline. It is a germanium Fuzz Face and fits
better on more tunes than the Caline. So if you are looking for that late 60's sound
it nails it. it is mini pedal and best of all $25.00 USD.

  1. Hey Paul. The funny thing here is they appear to be using BC549 silicon transistors. There has been some flak on this one being misrepresented as a germanium fuzz

    1. If you know for sure give me a heads up. For now my pedal is in the mail :-( I will pop off the bottom and have a look when it arrives. The level problem had me hooked. There is no need to have a level problem with silicon.

  2. Great post, but I thought the Pure Sky was a Timmy clone?

    1. Caline never said what the clone is and the Pure Sky sells well so they don't care. The Jan Ray was accused of a Timmy clone too. It sells really well in spite of rumours or price. Put a Timmy beside either pedal and it sounds very different. BUT put the Jan Ray and Blue Sky side by side and any difference is negligible!!! $30 gets you a $375 sound :-)
