This pedal has been around for 12 years. Those in the 'so-called' know laugh as they think the pedal is being sold to new comers who don't know better. The problem was when the pedal came out 12 years ago many reviewers didn't know better. The only guys that new what the original Marshall Stack sounded like owned one. Why would I say that when dear reader you have heard a thousand recordings of one? 

Simple ...back when most of those recordings were made no one wrote about the fact that on those records the player was using a Fuzz Face or a Tonebender thru a Rangemaster Treble Booster and then getting killer sustain from the sheer volume causing a lot of feedback.

Boss naively omitted this in designing their pedal. What you got was a nice fat crunch with no sustain. Yes, exactly what the Boss designers heard from that Marshall Super Lead 100 siting in their lab as their reference. LOL.

With a modern take of a MIAB the designer builds in the gain created by the guys in California through the 80's. I have several and love them but they are what I well know they are.

The layout of the Boss is a simple Level,gain treble and bass. The gain goes from light 

Crunch thru to more crunch, lol. It does not saturate or go anywhere near a high gain. 

CONCLUSION

You get a nice fat clean chunky Crunch. Ideal for backing vocals and most of the 

fills & turnarounds that play for short bit between the phrases of the singer. For all 

else you want to stomp on one of your modern super MIAB or other high gain winner.

It does what I demand from every pedal. Only one thing but done very, very well. 

 

HANDS ON 

I got it used in excellent condition for $65.00 USD

On it's own I love heavy bass with a bit of highs and 

running the gain at 2 o'clock. More has no tone and 

is very noisy. Stacking a Fuzz on it is killer.

I was able to replace 3 other OD from my board.

Those OD's are great but each is not as versatile.

With the Boss if i do not go with exaggerated bass or 

gain it can pull off great backup sounds yet go to a 

solo and sound great either way.
