An old style hard clipping distortion. These things often bordered on a Fuzz. This often allowed them to work great when you pull back on your guitars volume and give them nice dynamics when you pick softly or you dig in.
The best ones when backed off a bit have a near
metallic quality without any fizz or even fuzziness to them. It reminds me off a Fender Twin Reverb dimed. The mids are tight and unlike a Marshall there is no bloom.
It has a great thick chunky sound. They nailed the tone in the voicing so instead of a tone control per say they give you a knob to thin out or fatten the tone.
CONCLUSION
Push it and gets fat, chunky and balzy. It has virtually no fizz. At any gain the highs are crisp but not strident but warm. Blues, Americana and Outlaw country guys will love it!
A real winner.
