The Rat was the first ever OD. It is now what is referred to as a 'hard clipper.'

It was soon followed by the Tube Screamer but that was a soft clipper. So when Tate decided to make a hard clipper they started there. Like all hard clippers it starts by using an OpAmp to make the Rat like tone. It is the LED diode and silicon diode that make the 'big noises.'

The layout is simple enough with a gain, volume and tone. 

A toggle flips between the 3 diodes.

CONCLUSION 

The tone speaks for itself. It sounds aggressive with a wall of sound thing going on yet it is glassy sounding too. In short it has it's own identifiable sound. A damn good sound too.
