In the 50's a few players discovered that if you took the preamp out a movie projector or a radio or a small mixing board meant for radio broadcast mics etc. it was a killer boost pedal. When building these a manufacturer could buy a generic schematic. The Hofner Preamp was 

one such design.

CONCLUSION __

This unit stays true to the original design & therefore uses NOS military grade vintage British Germanium transistors.

Audio parts by todays standards created a lot of mud so designs that added a bit of exaggerate overtones/harmonics were made to give the sound definition.
