BENSON
GERMANIUM BOOST |
I love boosting with Germanium tones. That can be done with
transistors or diodes. Transistors create the most dramatic sound
but are very unstable. They can react radically to room temperature. They will sound different in a cold room then a hot room. Heat is the enemy. Secondly germanium often means weak highs. With a Fuzz
they exaggerated gain adds rich harmonics that will compensate
adding highs since overtones are highs. In short a backed
off Germanium Fuzz can be a better boost as just a boost can be
muddy.Benson have unique way of controlling the temperature of the transistor/diode by using heat to keep it at a fixed temperature
then biasing the pedal to sound best at that temperature.
That said it can still have problems with enough highs unless
getting them by overloading another diry pedal or the amp itself.
CONCLUSION ___
All that said I still love what a Germanium voice
does for my sound. I have a Fuzz, a Compressor
and a Booster that all use Germanium that I love.
