DIRTY LITTLE SECRET DELUXE
I bought V2 of the standard unit as my very first MIAB. It was as thin as a toothpick, had zero sustain and the nosiest pedal I had ever owned. I was profoundly disappointed, dare I say depressed.
I only owned Chinese mini pedals and many of those sounded if not better none were worse!!! Yes this is a much improved unit. The layout is Master Volume, Preamp Volume, Prescence, Treble, Mid and Bass. The Boost circuit has its own volume. Finally a
toggle lets you choose a lead or a bass boost.
CONCLUSION
It sounds very good but for one thing it is NOT a Plexi so it does not have the Plexi fat or punchy sound. In lacks serious balz without the help of a bass boost or using a Tube Screamer as a boost. It also does not have the JCM 800 aggression. NO! this is not a Slash sound, not even in the parking lot of the ballpark.
Hi Paul, Love your blog! It's my morning read every day! :-) Hoping you could help me please. I've never owned a Marshall so I don't know what gives you that Marshall 'thump'? Is it a JTM45? Plexi? JCM? Which MIAB pedal would emulate that? Right now, I'm looking at Weehbo, Colombo, PedalPalFX, LPD Pedals and Menatone at the moment. Any ideas? Thanks!

ReplyDeleteColumbo and PedalPalFX have nailed the real amps sound. The Pal 800 v.4 has the added thing of it having a lot of dynamic response. The LPD Pedals are dead even thing between feel, tone and response but are slightly impressionistic. The Weehbo are everyone's impression of what is cool about a MIAB. The sound is over exaggerated but very, very exciting. You just have to decide which niche is most appealing. One is not so much better than another just a different vibe. It is like having a 59 Les Paul Std and a 62 Strat. Which is better??? LOL. I have one of just about them all but on one tune only one is perfect and on another tune I want the other. If you understand true thump it is not the amp. it is the sonance from a 4x12 Marshall cab getting picked up by an Shure SM 57 mic by being right in front of the grill cloth. Some makers add a bass boost at about 130Hz to simulate it. If you are playing a Stack and about 10 feet away you do not hear it at all. In a concert the Shure puts it thru the big PA or on recording it gets recorded. The Wheebo Plex Drive covers that vibe if you push the lows.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking it over. If you wanted a Plexi with a balance between really heavy but can be backed off the less heavy but still fat sounds the Wheebo JCM covers it all without sounding compromised.
DeleteGreat! Thanks a lot Paul! Helpful advice.
ReplyDeleteNo problem :-) ...some guys are waiting for the $100.00 USD JV Effects Transmission. A clone of the $295.00 USD Hudson Electronics Broadcast. New stock is available today on Reverb. They use NOS parts so no parts could be found since April.
ReplyDeleteI have one being shipped today.
