_____ _WHATCHA MISSED IN DEC.2019

THE BEST NEW STUFF

68 PEDALS KING OF CLONE
As the name implies this is a part for part clone of the fabled King Of Tone you get everything but the 2 year wait for it. lol
The KOT is really a take on the forever popular Ibanez 808 Tube Screamer and is teamed up in the same box with a Marshall Blues Breaker knock off.
Both pedals are famous for their transparent attack which is in no small way possible because the way that the chip in the circuit leaks some of the clean signal thru.
I use it with the gain pushed back as low gain OD. In fact more of a dirty clean sound just bordering on a mild crunch.

DEAD BEAT VOID REVERB

A simply reverb pedal with just one sound. A large Plate. But the damn quality of sound is as good as a Strymon or even a Eventide. Think Dave Gilmour's reverb sound. Yes! That's it.
It is only $60.00 USD too. LOVE IT!!! My fave reverb! I've a few too even a Neunaber!
It is a killer always on reverb. Even if you crank a bit too high it never muddy's or washes out your sound.

MP Custom FX SAXSONIZER OD
Just buy one. LOL
It's only $79.00 USD and Killer!

HUMBOLDT The MAGELLAN
A Brit type pedal ...a very, full tone, rich and sumptuous but with a laid back sound that
beats out any pedal that guys into a Fusion would consider. It is well less than half the price the look, build and tone would lead you to expect!

METAL PEDALS Comparing the cheapest to the best!
Ola Englund was kind enough to step in with 2 vids that show us what you get for $600.00 USD and what you get for $60.00 USD.
Before you check out the Post find you credit card.

KEELEY OMNI REVERB
This gem has 3 voices Room, Spring & Plate. the Plate alone makes it worth buying.
These are sounds that sit behind the guitar not competing with it. In short no mater what kind of music you play you can get full use of this pedal. Yes it can be an always on pedal. Best of all the $130.00 USD price tag!!!

PedalPalFX Pal 959-V2
I have the fist version because it is Amp Emulator just like the real amp if you want the higher gains you end up with a louder output because like the real amp it hasn't a master and pre. It sounds amazing but you can not have unity gain without a pad. I have one on every loop so it is not problem just nuisance. I believe they added another pot to fix this.
They also added a switch so like the real amp you can switch between two voices or combine them. On the real amp you plug into one of two inputs but you can use a jumper cable combining them. The switch is a good idea.
The pedal will not be out until January so a post will come out then.

FRANTONE CREAM PUFF
A Fuzz.
I would give anything just to see your face when you hear it.
It just occurred to me you better be sitting when you hear it.
No sh@t!!!
The coolest thing is you think I am exaggerating. Now that is funny ...really funny!!!
Check out perhaps the Best Fuzz on the Planet!!!

HAGSTROM IMPALA TREMAR
Now would you buy $375.00 USD guitar made by Hagstrom. NO?
You just might change your mind.

FOX GEAR RAINBOW DIGITAL DELAY
Pro quality sound for an entry level price!!!

MADE BY MIKE  SIGN OF THE CHIMES
The only convincing Vox AC30 pedal I have ever heard. Simply stunning!

LAWRENCE PETROSS DESIGNS LPD Eighty 7
There are several places on my blog where this shows up.
I truly believe it is the very best Marshall in a box in the damn world.
Why??? Because I think when someone imagines the Marshall sound it is the sound of this pedal they think of. So I could have had the first one ever made but I just kept dragging my butt or getting another pedal that doesn't cover this ground.
BUT ...mine is on it's way!!!!

Tell me this isn't the very best! LOL

OVERDRIVE- TONE CITY Wild Fro ...a Rabea Massaad dirt pedal ...for sure!!!

$60.00 USD
 TONE CITY WILDFRO OD
This is the second in a series of Anderton's Music's collaboration with J. Wong in designing some store exclusive pedals for Andertons.

Rabea Massaad had a big part in the design.
It will give you anything from a medium gain to a high gain sound.
It has a very 80's American sound to it. It reminds me of something
Mesa Boogie would have made.

Rabea likes an OD that is primarily all mids. This can work out really well. BUT!!! A pedal like that needs a lot of detail in the overtones to get a really great sound. I find this pedal only speaks to me when it is dimed. At full out the lows come up a bit and start to growl and the harmonics bloom just from the excessive distortion. So then ...yes it sounds damn good.
Check out the video at 13.45 This is where it says BUY ME!

CONCLUSION
It has a mediocre cheap dirt pedal sound until you crank the sh@t out of it.
BUT ...no doubt about it as a 'wall of sound' pedal set wide open it can kill!!!
No shame having this on your board!!! Cheap or not!!!

OVERDRIVE- TONE CITY Durple ....funky bluesy OD ...impressive!!!

$60.00 USD
 TONE CITY DURPLE OVERDRIVE

Peter Honore of Anderton's Music have designed
an exclusive Overdrive.
It is a simple blues type OD but the voicing is impressive.
It has the sound of a mid 50's Chicago area tube amp
I suspect it was designed by J. Wong King of clone pedals.
It is likely a BossBD-2 Blies Driver with some major tweeking of the voicing.

CONCLUSION
Nothing wrong with this little gem. Tone City make a good product.
They are good value for money. The pedal was never designed to be a WOW overdrive.
It could however be the perfect icing for your OD cake.

CHORUS-G-LABS Clutter Chorus CC-1 ...high end look and sound ...low end price

 G-LABS CLUTTER CHORUS CC-1
Another budget gourmet pedal from G-Labs
A very high quality product all around from our Polish friends.
The secret here is 'digital'. In a blindfold test I have to admit my prejudice for analog pedals lol. Nothing can beat the best analog pedals for sound. But analog magic id damn expensive.
This damn thing sounds stellar.

A simple layout with dept, rate and mix.
....and a killer sound!

CONCLUSION

AS usual the value for money is second to none.
This is a classic style chorus without all the extra's
Most of us do not use those extras as they tend to use
excessive use of the tuning. In short they tend to put
the unit so out of tune that that the pedal becomes a 'special FX'
So I for one never use the weird stuff.
For most players if you were to declare another make of chorus to be a perfect 10
this would have to be a 9.8.
A perfect 10 will cost you triple!!!
To get a real perspective keep in mind that every day someone puts out a CD or other recording of a band where they use a Boss, MXR, or Ibanez Chorus and the C-Lab
eats these and all other every day pedals for breakfast!!!

ANALOG DELAY-XVIVE Echoman ...great new delay with chorus and vibrato too

$110.00 USD
 XVIVE ECHOMAN ANALOG DELAY
Nothing new but well done just the same.
Xvive lost their designer J. Wong when he got fed up with
their nickel and diming forcing him to spoil many potentially great pedals that would put them in the serious pro league. He quit and formed Tone City ...making the first budget gourmet pedals.

Well it seem to force them to get their act together. They brought in Thomas Blug who has done 4 pedals and later Jamie Mallender to make a serious bass compressor.
Modulation in an analog delay adds a lot to the sound. I have 3 analog delays with modulation. Xvive took it further by actually having their own MN3005 chip made giving you power and quality to add both chorus and vibrato. It forced them to up their price but it has really upped their game.

CONCLUSION
Definitely a contender!

MODULATION- WAMPLER Terraform ... flawless, multi functional, small

 WAMPLER TERRAFORM MODULATION PEDAL

Nothing new just an all in one modulation pedal that is small, very hands on and dead simple to use.
If like me you find units like a Strymon an overwhelming headache to use you will love this pedal.
The pedal is digital but Wampler has gone out of their way to give the pedal a very analog kind of sound.
I can not fault this pedal.
I do find myself back into two frames of mind.
Digital keeps not only getting better but cherry picking 2 or 3 of the very, very best analog units still sounds better to my ears.
But???
CONCLUSION
Do we tip toe into some of these smaller digital wonder pedals or just get an
Fractal Audio Axe-FXIII and get it over with. The Axe may not be cheap but
it makes your entire rig light, simple and once mastered simple.
No more noise or messy wiring etc. etc.
Damn  ...thank god I am a musician and hence artist so I don't have to be sensible. LOL

FLANGER- THORPY Camouflage ...for most guys this is easily the best out there!!!

 THORPY CAMOUFLANGE FLANGER
$275.00 USD

This has been a long time coming. Right off it is the fattest Flanger I ever head. It can do a huge amount of different sounds without heading into the abstract. BUT if you want the crazy stuff it is all there too.

I have the A/DA but would love to add the Retro-Sonic. The Pedal Guys cover them all.
Dan points out to get the Thorpy thing you would need both the A/DA and the Retro-Sonic.

Bottom line you actually have the best of the best
to compare.
So do it!!!

CONCLUSION
I have to admit that there are zero bad choices here!!!
For now I will just use my A/DA.
Perhaps later I will add the Retro-Sonic

YOU WILL FIND THERE ARE SEPARATE POSTS HERE ON SBS
OF ALL THESE FLANGERS.

OVERDRIVE- BBE Blacksmith Distortion ....worth considering? ...an upgraded classic

$80.00 USD
BBE BLACKSMITH DISTORTION
Not the last word in a Metal pedal but you can get some half decent noise out of it at a damn cheap price!!!
A simple set up with 3 way EQ and your standard gain and volume.
I believe it is an old Boss DS-1 but with the 3 way EQ added.
So you get that classic bees are buzzing distortion but with enough EQ to bury it. lol

CONCLUSION
Well can you find better for $80.00 USD.
No?
Well a damn useful noise even as a second or third dirt pedal.

AMPLIFIER- possibly state of the art for less then $1000.00 USD

This ain't my usual post so just follow the yellow blue brick road!  >>>
STRYMON IRIDIUM amp and ir cab
$400.00 USD
If you have read the Strymon IRIDIUM review
you know that a serious pro sounding modeling amp rig is now only  $400.00 USD.
In fact it has the highest sampling rate on the market!
Sampling rate is like horse power in a racing car.
In short it's sounds have the potential to sound
better then the best!
Dead cheap for the kind of sound that one would expect in the $2000.00 USD range!
It does not have all the bells and whistles of the big rigs.  BUT!!!
You get a convincing Fender Deluxe, Vox AC30 &
a Marshall 1959 Plexi sound including the speaker sounds associated with these amps!
Every gourmet amp in the world started with the schematic of one of these three amps. The 3 most important amps ever made!
So...
Add a simple pre, and a good budget class D 200 watt amp and a speaker cab and you have replaced your present amp with a serious sounding rig that is very small & light weight
Important too ...it can easily compete at the gig with your drummer.
How cool is that?
$205.00 USD
MONOPRICE UNITY 200-watt Bridgeable
Power amp
So who the f. are Monoprice
They are an American online company that sell all sorts of consumer tech made in China and stamp their goofy name on it.
Some how they missed stamping any name on the Unity 200.
They have a fairly good rep. They buy reasonably good stuff if for no other reason then they
have to support the warranty. lol

I will give them the benefit of the doubt
as they are a good 30% cheaper than Art that are your only cheap pro amps to choose from.
Being a half rack size keeps it nice and small. It does come with rack ears if you want to rack mount it. It was designed for the install market not for studio or portable PA.
It is already in numerous churches, schools and other institutions.
The amp is a 200 watt Class D amp, That is not as loud as that sounds. For years when talking watts we musicians have used tube amps as our measurement. A 20 to 50 watt tube amp is usually as loud as a 200 watt type C amp.
So the Monoprice puts out 200 watts into an 8 ohm speaker when bridge in mono.
Bridging means summing up the power from a stereo amp into mono.
so a 100 watt per side stereo amp becomes a 200 watt mono amp.
So it is just right. Neither too much or too little power.

You will need a preamp.

$60.00 USD
ROLLS MP13 MINI-MIC PREAMP
The Strymon has a unbalanced line out. This mic pre has both. This little studio quality preamp made in the good ol' USA is only $60.00. A real winner.
Just a nice simple level control is perfect. What we need is headroom and distortion free clarity. We have all the EQ we need from the Iridium.
I have the luxury of owning a quasi parametric EQ pedal.
I will use it to flatten the frequency response of the speaker cabinet as the voices on all modeling boxes are programmed
to sound the most accurate thru a studio monitor.
But since in spite of being 2 or 3 way systems ...PA systems and stage monitors are highly coloured. In short a guitar
speaker can sound as good or better for our use.
$30.00 USD

Danelectro Fish and Chips clone of am MXR graphic EQ
could do a great job too. I got mine New and cheap too. $30.00 USD

$260.00 USD

The only thing   missing is a speaker cab.
Since it is a modeling rig you can use a small
Sound Reinforcement cab ...even a wedge monitor
or go for a guitar cab. Actually most use the PA stuff.
A PA cab usually has a horn or tweeter for full frequency response
but a guitar is not full frequency. The only thing that may improve is the room reverb feature. Many of us are content already using reverbs and delays etc. without these added frequencies.
A Fender SC112 cab is only $260.00 USD
You can perhaps use what you already have.
I am.
I am using my home made pine open back cab with a Celestion NEO Creamback 12"

GOURMET MODLER AMP
JUST UNDER A THOUSAND!!!
Keep in mind ...world class sound ...comparable to any gourmet set up!
On a recording ...you will be quite literally invincible!!!
in a word! KILLER!

______________________________________________________________________

OK.....WHY????
Out there in the real world serious recording is going direct.
Large venues are eliminating the backline and using only the PA
on all levels from medium size clubs to outdoor concerts
Even big name stars are finding the cost of touring only practical
by taking one guitar & if they want control of their sound ...then modeling their own tube amps
their own sound is the way to go. Some get Kemper themselves to model their
present rig so they're playing a clone of their fav amp done dead perfect!!!
Kemper has brought out a pedalboard floor style version of it
recently to accommodate it as a better fly rig.

BACK TO THE REAL WORLD

Like me ...many of us are playing the small clubs and perhaps could be there
quite a while yet. So having a small modeling rig as a replacement for
a club size Combo amp makes sense. A few makers  ...even Friedman
are making their own Type D amps for the job. Needlessly expensive too!

There is a enormous advantage. You can even practice using the headphone

plug on the Strymon to playing an out door gig to hundreds of people.
Your whole world class rig can be less then a thousand!
It is impressive enough to hold it's own against the Kemper too!!!
Checkout the comparison video's on the Strymon Iridium Post.

If the Strymon's sound are better it is only so by a fraction! It took me many listens of the same vid!
If you had to compare them by hearing a band do a set using one and a set after a break using the other it would be impossible to tell!!! Absolutely impossible!!!

Rob Chapman had to choose between Kemper 'models' of a Fender, Vox, and Marshall

and the real amps in a blindfold test.
He tried 3 times on their own ...and 3 times boosting them with a Tube Screamer.
He had 6 times to get it right. He got it wrong on all 6 choices.

I repeat MR. TUBE AMP GOT IT WRONG EVERY TIME!!!

WOW ...that sold me. I thought overdriving a modeled sound could not help but sound fake!!!
Apparently it does not!!! I am not giving up my 26 dirt pedals!!! lol

Even a die hard Tube Amp guy like me will take the plunge. I may still keep my

Marshall but it is virtually 2020 so it's time to join the present century!!!

Stay tuned ...which one will be my real amp and which will be the back up?

SERIOUS ADVICE-
WAIT UNTIL I ACTUALLY TRY IT!!!
THIS MAY NOT BE UNTIL MARCH!

DEC.15/19
So the more I think of it the more I want it. LOL
I did a lot of drawings designing my faux amp head.
It occurred to me that I want front access to the amp's volume.
Keep in mind these amps are designed for institutions where
they are usually built right into a locked cabinet.
They are set up to left with a 'fixed' volume etc.
So they do not need to be touched once set.
Simply turned on or off
.
Yes live you could turn it up full and adjust the volume from
the Strymon or the preamp ...but I find ideally the master volume is
where to go.

Live I do not wish to go behind the amp to adjust the volume.

It is a luxury I am willing to pay for so I have decided to get the
UNITY 450 watt model. Total overkill LOL

$250.00 USD

_____________________________________________________________

I digress but you should know...
WARNING
Below are are two pedalboard amps. Both identical except for the paint job. lol
The first is a Harley Benton at $100.00 USD the second is a Carvin at $200.00 USD
Both are inadequate with about 20 watts of REAL db. In short a live drummer will drown you out!!!
One is a reasonably priced practice amp the other is a rip off.

NOTE: There are many pedalboard and micro amps out there. Be warned! If they do not tell you then their advertised wattage is rated at 4 ohms. BUT 4 ohm speakers are rarer the '59 Les Pauls and your average speaker cab is 8 ohms. Add to that these are modest amps. Bottom line anything less than 200 watts in a small &/or budget amp can be a real set back.
Ideally for MOST is a 50 watt RMS amp with a 12 inch speaker Celestion or Eminence
Again ...a Class D 200 watt which is usually rated into 4 ohms as well gives you 50 watts RMS

A loud drummer puts out enough level to match a 50 watt RMS amp
Unfortunately no one has yet found the volume knob on a drummer of any make. If you do please let us all know. Yes we know ...a Drummer does have a foot activated off switch located between the legs of the unit but it is inadequate to solving our problem once the unit is reactivated.

PICKUPS- SEYMOUR DUNCAN CUSTOM SHOP 78 ....the 'Brown Sound' or ....not???

 SEYMOUR DUNCAN CUSTOM SHOP 78

Yes folks a PU. Why???
Well in my privilege place in the world of pedals I get all the insider gossip.
Lately a lot of guys are even discreetly shelving their Bare Knuckle jobbies and buying  the CS78's.
It is virtually an Alnico II PAF type PU originally wound for some guy named Eddie years ago!
Yes this happened light years ago. So as a new Duncan offering the guys picking up on the PU couldn't care less. They are buying it and passing around the word because they think the PU is simply damn good. Balzy but not so dirty that it can not cover a lot of bases when you need it to clean up.

CONCLUSION
Well I have I do not have one!  LOL
I just thought you need to know.
At $160.00 USD it ain't no bargain.
The guys at the Duncan Custom Shop are really cool guys ...they really bust their butt
to help you. They broke every rule in the book to get me what I wanted. In fact they got
a famous guy to not only agree to make me a copy of 'his' PU but I even got one wound and meant for him.

OVERDRIVE TRITONLAB Devils Wine JFET Distortion ... Alex's newest!!!

$190.00 USD
With FREE shipping!!!!
TRITONLAB DEVILS WINE
This company is a one man show. A brilliant engineer that makes state of the art OD pedals for a hobby. LOL
I couldn't buy the parts for what Alex's charges. all NASA spec/Military grade sh@t. lol
He is even a nice guy.
He resides in Estonia. It has a total population of less then a million.

CONCLUSION
As usual Alex is giving the damn thing away!
Do not be surprised when your pedal is shipped within 24 hours of ordering it!

As for the demo!
This guy may be a great player but you never learn anything about a dirt pedal.
It suits his style to back of big heavy sounds so you are left thinking a pedal may only produce a lot easy 'safe' sh@t. Your average $40 MIC pedal would sound as good on this guys tunes. He also does not go thru each knob and demonstrate the range in the controls etc.
Please Alex get this pedal to Brett Kingman in Australia!!! He does your pedal justice!!!

OVERDRIVE- SEYMOUR DUNCAN Diamond Head ...80's American Metal sound!!!

$230.00 USD
 SEYMOUR DUNCAN DIAMOND HEAD

A very aggressive OD. To my my ears it more American then Brit. Shades of Mesa's Rectifier efforts.
Brit boxes tend to be rounder and warmer. Good news as there of lots of great Plexi and JCM 800's to choose from but not a lot of American sounding gear and definitely not pedals this good!

Gain, level a 3 way EQ and a switchable boost!
Typical Duncan quality and Duncan's pedals are always great value for money!!!

A great sound!!!
Definitely a contender
CONCLUSION
There is a lot of choice out there for what many consider the zenith of the dirt sound 80's amps turned into pedals. It is time when the gain was taken as far as it can go and still maintain a harmonically rich tube tone. A tube amp still sounded like a tube amp. Modern metal is affective and is great fun but even so it has now become all but a totally synthetic sound.
I would not buy any 80's like pedal without putting it up beside a
Lawrence Petross  LPD Eighty 7
Hell I will save you some time ...check it out!

OVERDRIVE- WHEEBO Bastard Low End Distortion ...really a Metal pedal & a damn good one

$250.USD
 WHEEBO BASTARD LOW END DISTORTION
Wheebo are not new to this site. They simply do not make a

 pedal that can be dismissed.
It goes from a medium gain thru to a high gain distortion.
It has a very aggressive low end.
The whole pedal is in fact rough and aggressive. One thing that stands out is its definition. Zero mud!

I must admit I love it. I have recently got an old  Dod Bone Shaker that could be described in much the same way BUT the Bastard takes it all to a totally different level.

CONCLUSION
What's not to like! A lot of new Metal pedals going for a liquid smooth sound with no serious low end! Personally for me Metal should show no quarter! This one does not! It takes no prisoners and when it's finished those that are dead will be the lucky ones!!! lol
I love it!!!!

OVERDRIVE - DIAMOND Nine Zero Two ...a pedal that can nail that just before break up sound!

$250.00 USD
 DIAMOND NINE ZERO TWO
It is a low to medium gain pedal built with an obsession to get all the detail of tone at that gain stage right.
It makes a a Tube Screamer look like a Metal pedal. lol

For those who need comparison think old Fender Tweeds and brown face amps.

Diamond always do things 'their way' when they get it
right they nail it. Doing things different is a given with them.
it looks simple but there are many different gain stage you go thru just on the one simple knob labeled gain. By breaking down a real tube amp in multiple stages you get complex interactions that tubes make.
In a real tube amp not a single control works independently
so boosting for example the mids may also turn down the lows or reshape the highs.
The 902 addresses this masterfully.

CONCLUSION
Yes by your average OD standards this seems ridiculously subtle. But others that make low gain pedals usually end up with a sound that is extremely artificial. Artificial on a Fuzz can be great but on something a delicate as the area between clean and dirty it needs to be right.
I find nothing come close to this for that just before breakup sound!!!

OVERDRIVE- GREENCHILD THRESHER ...a hybrid of a couple of classics

$180.00 USD
 GREENCHILD THRESHER
Hey started with a Marshall blues Breaker schematic throw in some of the ol' Maxon 820. The controls are labeled level gain mid and tilt.
Pull back the gain &  you are still left with a serious boost pedal.

The pedal was designed to be nasty ....very nasty and it is. To be honest 'just' a OD this nasty certainly will not suit a lot of players. BUT if like me you use a few OD's having a great nasty one amongst them is a given.

The pedal is beautifully built. Sturdy, compact with high end parts.

CONCLUSION
This pedal has a niche of it's own. Those that love it will always love it. Everyone should have at least one slightly off the wall OD. Is this yours? I have the French Celmo Pimento Sardine. But hey!
maybe it needs a partner. lol

REVERB-DEADBEAT The Void Reverb ...small package ...small price ....big sound

$100.00USD
 DEAD BEAT THE VOID REVERB
A California builder who moved to Brooklyn who just wants to make unique high quality pedals that sale for affordable prices.
This is the third pedal company that the makers see a Plate as a great always on reverb. A good Plate reverb can be full and rich but will not muddy your sound.
Unlike a Spring ...a Plate will stay tight and clean so if you push it up it will not dirty your sound.  Kept low in a mix you get nice tight sound that easily rivals a Spring in fact usually it is much better.
Dave Gilmour's sound was married to a plate. Nothing is more complimentary to a guitar.

It is a large Plate so it will sub as a Room reverb easily.
I have the Mr, Black Reverb (mini) which is a small plate
so it has lot less low end. It works nearly as well overall but is a killer on dirt sounds!
Recently on sale on Amazon for $60.00 USD but they are all but sold out.

A simple rig. First the pedal looks bigger then it is. It is as deep as a mini but twice as wide. With just decay and mix it takes only a second to mix a great sound.

Conclusion
The Nux Oceanic is another good choice. So with it and Mr Black all being quite good you do have a nice choice. I also have the TC Electronic HOF. The same idea but although you can download a Plate it comes with a Hall which is often too much for an always on.
I have mentioned it often. In a live situation an all bells and whistles Reverb can really add some drama in a tune. BUT you can seldom leave it on for the whole tune and switching it off and having zero reverb sounds ameteur. Hence a decent always on is a must!
The VOID is definitely hard to beat. as good as the others but cheaper too.
soon as I heard it I was wowed! I saw the sale and bingo mine is on it's way!

HANDS ON
So it arrived at my door in a box the size of a basket ball. LOL Inside was a box nearly as big! It was the pedals box. It is a really nice box like te kind you get a gourmet pedal in but it was big enough 10 or more of the little reverb pedal. To be fair they did tuck in a power supply and 2 small patch cords.
So I plugged it in. WOW!!! It exceeds my expectations by double!!!
Definitely gotta have pedal!!! maybe it only has one basic sound but that sound matches anything you could get from a Eventide or Strymon!!!! No Sh@t guys it really is that good and for $60!!!
