OVERDRIVE- TONEWAVE FX Bright ...a Tube screamer that thinks it's a Rat!!! NO!

$165.00 USD
TONEWAVE FX BRIGHT OD
This company makes 3 pedals and they are all Tube Screamers.
In short they use a jrc-4558 OpAmp to make the initial distortion and drive. The 'Preset' as an always on pedal to gently beef up the overall tone and presence the 'Caramel' to do the standard Tube screamer kind of thing and the 'Bright' that takes it into Metal territory.
Like the good ol' Tube Screamer the voice is fixed and you have level and gain and a treble knob to leave open or pull it back to cut some highs.
CONCLUSION
Woah is this in your face or what! That said I insist you compare it with Svi Metal Zoid. The Zoid has a cool Steam Punk look and does the same thing ...maybe even better if you like even more gain.

A good demo BUT ...Rodent ? I think he means a Rat?
the Rat has never had a Tube Screamer OpAmp of any kind.
It has a LM308 or OP07 which is a totally different and more
grainy sound.

  1. The Rat's LM308 is an op-amp that is so bad it's good, mixed with happy accident special sauce, with hard clipping diodes like the Distorion +. Different, but kind of the same, it's all in how the ingredients work together. That's why there are so many rat clones that don't cut it, it has to be the original Rat recipe for Rat magic. Of course, that is why there are so many pedals; to each his own, YMMV.

  2. I own one of each. I have a BIG BOX Rat clone a part for part NOS replica. It is actually cleaner than the Rat II. I usually stack the RatII on the the vintage Rat and the you get definition from the Rat and the Ratt II gives you a huge girth to the sound.

  3. Hi Paul,
TJ here from Tonewave. Let me start by saying that I appreciate your comments and review. Its very important to me, as a builder, to get people's feedback.

That said, allow me to say that you are NOT right about some things you are claiming...

First, both Preset and Bright are not even close to a Tube Screamer what so ever. Basically the only thing they share with a Tube Screamer it's the use of one JRC4558C chip (or two in case of Bright), and definitely that doesn't mean they are a TS. You can sub that chip for a TL072, for example, and you can't hear no difference. The chip alone does not make the pedal. Circuit-wise they are completely different from a TS. On the other hand, Caramel has a heavily modified TS based circuit, being the biggest one the removal of both input and output buffers...but the chip its a NE5532. Again, it's not the chip that qualifies the circuit type.

Two things that you're absolutely correct... Original Rat uses LM308 chip and Bright does not sound like a Rat. And I never intended that... I don't know where that idea came to life but I never presented Bright as a Rat inspired pedal.

Even newer ProTo Rats don't use lm308's anymore.. are they not Rats because of that fact?

You cannot categorize a pedal only by the use of certain IC chip. That's just NOT true.

Sorry for the long text but I needed to enlighten things up.

    Cheers
