1968 MARSHALL...MARSHALL 1987 50 watt Lead
This BIG MUFF ram's head
|
It cost me $260.00 USD ...it was a bit dirty but there wasn't a mark on it. It was just a half decent used amp being sold for the average price ...LOL
I had it for years...the head had a cover and I always moved it myself. The cab was toast after years and years of using it but the amp was mint. I sold it when I moved back over the pond. I was broke. LOL
THE LITTLE DIGRESSION
I also sold an original Gibson Flying V which I got about $600.00 USD for. Hey that's life!....you want to dedicate your life to 'YOUR' music this sh@t is going to happen.
There is an up side to my guitar gains and losses.
Years later I got a Daphne blue mint condition 66 Fender Mustang
It was made 3 months after the very first Mustang ever made.
I paid $260.00 USD.
BUT...it was stolen.
I had an insurance to replace it with a Fender of equal value...that turned out to be a Fender Custom shop Strat in Sonic blue with a maple neck. This is one of my current guitars of which I have 6.
It gets better...they also stole a 76 Fender Musicmaster....for which I could replace it with.
1959 LP Special reissue |
Since it was a new reissue at the time....I had the bridge PU removed and a Seymour Duncan
'Pearly Gates' PAF put in.
THIS GUITAR IS THE BEST SOUNDING GUITAR I HAVE EVER OWNED.
(Keep in mind I did own two 50's LP at one time)
I think I strummed about 3 chords on the day played it with the Duncan and I new I had a killer guitar!!!! My bass player was there.. stopped dead and said WOW!!! before I could even open my mouth to do the same. lol
BACK TO THE AMPS
When I got back 'across the pond' I got a mint condition 1968 Fender Twin Reverb...first year silver faced. I always bought mint...I am fussy..being the first year was just dumb luck
THE LONDON CLUBS IN THE EARLY '70's
Well they were actually all pubs. Many held only 50 to 75 people. The stages were nano. LOL
The better bands had Marshall half stacks...nothing was ever mic'd but 50 watts was loud. What is not known is that if someone got signed and did bigger gigs..most loved their 50's so they used two. It was well known that the 50's had much better sustain. Remember these amps had one channel and no separate preamp volume. I must admit playing on 10 was not unusual. LOL
Yes ...they would use two 50 watt full stacks to play bigger venues and promote their first album.
A lot of those early pics you see were not 100watts. But I know that most young players assume these days they were. Most players were not as volume nuts as is rumoured..LOL

We all tried to keep the levels even with the drums...and bass.
Hey...if the whole band is at an equal level it sounds ballsy...even if the overall level is relatively low.
This is as true today as then.
Most of us from the late 60's/70's can still hear. BUT we all have lost some hearing. Anything louder then a drummer without mics is just stupid. In the real world that is pretty much 40 watts or less. It depends on the amp and speakers design and efficiency. A really well made class A tube amp at 15 watts can keep up with a drummer. On the other hand a badly designed and usually cheap 100 watt solid state (transistor) amp with a cheap speaker may not be louder.
Personally I recommend if the amp is all tube get a 50 watt...40 at the least.
I am currently using a Bluguitar AMP1. Check out the Post ...
