OVERDRIVE-FRIEDMAN MOTOR CITY DRIVE....will this eclipse the BE-OD!!!!

FRIEDMAN MOTOR CITY DRIVE

A 12ax7 tube OD

Not yet even for sale. The scoop on it says that the tube

$300.00 USD

makes a big difference to blah blah blah on MOST
OD pedals.
Actually it makes squat. The most popular
OD in the world Friedman's own BE-OD.It does not need  a tube ...and it does not use a tube. What is more for it to make a serious difference it would have to be pushed really hard. It is powered by a 12v adapter ...anything less and the tube would not even light up. LOL
Over the years there have been and are lots of tube driven
OD's. You have not seen them here because they either
sounded like crap or were as big and expensive as a whole tube amp.
It might surprise me ...but if it is good..the sound will come from the transistors in it and not from it's 12ax7 pilot light. LOL
They do a tube Fuzz. The thing about the fuzz in the first place was it was the first use of the transistor to be used to make rock music. So A tube model is like a
steam driven computer. these pedals scream of Gimmick!!!

  2. The trouble with most tube stlye pedals is that they need a transformer and some serious AC power to do anything but put a bit sugar on the sound. Most of then are running on low voltage DC adapters and NONE of the distortion in the pedal is created by the tubes. In short it is marketing thing. You think you have something special.

    1. This has a transformer to go from 12v->220v plate voltage at at least 400ma. I think Friedman knows what they are doing.

  3. The Friedman web page strongly implies these are running at 220v plate. as if!

    1. Yea, that's what transformers do.

    2. Funny, but placing different tubes actually does change the sound noticably, unlike most "tube" pedals.
-this, however, is not your typical starved-plate crap design, it's getting fed some healthy power.

Pete Thorn makes it a point to mention the sound difference a different variant tube makes,
& I'll take his word over an uneducated opinion any day.
I collect tubes of this type, so it is at least, going to be fun to try out.
      Thanx for your opinion, though.

  4. I am 59 years old and this is the best overdrive pedal I have ever heard. If you swap out the tube you can hear the difference. This is the most natural sounding od I have heard. Discussion over. Joe
