Charles Henry makes a small 12 watt amp that the 'cork sniffers' wet themselves over. He also does a Fuzz and now we have an OD. The unit is FET transistors, yes it is OpAmp free. There are a couple of diodes for the higher gains. A charge pump pushes the thing up over 30 volts so you get the headroom of a good real tube amp. Layout is Volume, Tone and Gain. One toggle is a bass cut if you need to tighten the sound.  

The other toggle gives you classic asymmetrical distortion or you can move to symmetrical distortion for a smoother more compressed sound. In short a bit of Tube Screamer push.

CONCLUSION __ I find it sounds its best with the 

lower gain settings it is very, very transparent. 

Pushed into the medium gain it has a very 

nice mild scoop giving it a boosted old Fender vibe. 

There is really not a one size fits all OD but this 

is damn close.
