To say a Comp sounds killer is an oxymoron. Reviewers are usually boasting that a Comp is great because it is so transparent its invisible . The original model came out decades ago and was the first optic comp. Andrian Below still uses his, and it is an always on pedal and key to his sound. Compared to it's only rival the MXR Dynacomp it was indeed transparent at it's introduction. The preamp part of the original circuit sounded so sweet they added a kind of boost overdrive to it. It was pretty funky but backed off it had a germanium warmth and vibe to it that the current mini version has kept.CONCLUSION
Team it up with a single coil especially a Tele or Strat and the compression and mild germanium sounding pre is killer. It has that Hendrix like sound that Hendrix got from pulling back the guitar volume to clean up his Fuzz Face.
What wasn't broke they wisely did not fix. I have had mine for years and have since bought and sold many comps. Yes I have the hot 'cool' ones know, in fact three. A wise man said that a Comp is the OD for your clean sound. Who has just one OD anymore?
Just think of this like a high gain OD.
