NOISE GATE- ISP TECHNOLOGIES Deci-Mate ...the 'best' are back with a mini pedal

 ISP TECHNOLOGIES DECI-MATE
$117.00 USD
There are 2 kinds of noise gates out there. A simple single end type and a 'smart gate'.
A single end is very simple you set up your guitar pedal to a sound you like and turn the knob until the noise stops.
How does it work? Simple ...think of the guitar signal as the total volume being on 10...the loudness of the noise is 1. The gate is now set to turn off if the volume is on 1 but if it 'hears' anything louder then 1 it lets the sound thru.
Old designs were very sensitive so they would turn on and off
just by your picking hand touch the strings etc. It would drive you nuts
with this on -off, on-off, on-off pumping sound. Another problem was if the noise was very bad and it varied as well at perhaps at a level of 2
or more it would chop the tail of the note.
ISP got rid of the worst off this. Not perfect but usable.

The best solution is a smart gate. It is a single end gate that takes a second signal of your clean guitar signal and as long as it 'hears' it ...it lets the signal pass regardless.
This stops pretty much all mis-triggering of the gate. The only problem is you end up with an in out on the pedal plus a second in out forming a loop to keep the noise pedal in.

The single end works best on low noise problems like single coil PU noise or low and medium gain dirt pedals.
Oddly enough it can be cool on an extremely noisy Metal pedal or Fuzz if set to not only kill the noise but the whole signal for 'Stops' where part of the style of playing is to chop off the end of a power chord dead clean.

If you switch between different dirt pedals in a single tune it can become necessary to have a gate for each since they may need a different setting. I use 4.

CONCLUSION
ISP have always had the best single end gate. Cheap gates are a waste of money other then to kill small things like the sweep on a Phaser etc. or a really light hum.Yes folks this pedal wins by default. lol
The only good news is the mini is cheaper and smaller then their regular size pedal that I am sure will very soon be discontinued.
