COMPRESSOR- SONICAKE Source Comp___NEW___ Urei 1176 clone for $50

SONICAKE
Source  C O M P
$50.00 USD
A great idea but unless you try one it is all about trust. This pedal primarily a good algorithm as except for the bypass signal it is
digital.
The video is best for getting a handle on the functions so I won't bother you writing a confusing manual.
           CONCLUSION __
The look is impressive. There are at least five
others doing an 1176. Origin's Clali 76 put the guitar
pedal version on the map and are still reigning king
of comps with their Origin Compact, Clali 76 V.2.
I recently just got the Universal Audio UAFX 1176.
they bought out UREI before they even had been
made for a year. They still make the UREI. I trust
they have accurately cloned their own Comp.
At $170.00 USD they are not pricey. That said if
I needed another Comp I think I would take a
chance on this one.

  1. Hi mr Paul! I believe that the UAFX 1176 is digital but this Sonicake is as they say 100% analog. I`m curious how it holds up to a more expensive 1176..

  2. Sonicake only makes the buffered bypass in the pedal analog. FACT is if it was all analog it would be a very big selling feature and it would be at the top of their list of features on the info page on the site. They do mention the buffer in the Spec page and it is a diversion so the average reader will assume means it is all analog. It does no mean it is not Pro sounding.
99% of all 1176 sounds you here on record were added by studios using Universal Audio's downloaded Urei software. In fact it is the same software used in UAFX 1176 pedal. The UAFX has more features. One is it can produce a second Compressor stacked onto the first giving you double the sustain. I bought one and use that sound every time. The UAFX is $169.00 USD.
Comp as are like Overdrives for your clean sound. Different tunes will sound better with different comps. My guess is the Sonicake would be ideal as a second comp so you have choice. I may yet get one. Perfect first Comp too as it a small investment and it should sound Pro.

  4. I just ordered one of these compressors direct from Sonicake on ebay. They offered a discount, and ebay offered another 7% discount. It was $30.39 before TN state tax, which made it $34.09 total!

  7. i just try it for the firts time today and im impressed, it works great at 18v.
the only problem i found is that it cuts below 100Hz, i looked inside and i found a trimmer and a jumper slot in the bottom PCB... maybe the jumper bypass the HPF?

  8. Hi there, I just got the pedal yesterday and also saw the trimmer. I'm wondering what it's function is. Let me know if you have played around with it. Does it set the HPF?

    1. I didn't dare to touch it, I wrote to sonicake and they very kindly told me not to touchanything... haha
The lack of low frequencies is an acceptable deficiency if we take into account that
      A: it's very cheap
B: it's not noisy at all
C: it works perfectly as expected

It's very important to work at 18v, I've never had an 1176 and i cant compare at all, but I'm a live sound technician and I use the 1176 digital from the midas M32 a lot.
IMHO it sounds better than the midas version (although I've tried it in very different environments)

I hope that over time there will be more community and someone will take the time to study it. But it's a cheap pedal that probably won't transcend into anything important.
      Whoever has it, enjoy it!

  9. After I had posted my comment, I had also written to Sonicake who kindly told me the exact same thing lol. Wondering their if their response is boilerplate, or if the trimmer actually jeopardizes the functionality. But just like you, I do not dare touch it. I've been enjoying the pedal thus far and honestly do not notice the lack of low end, but that my just be my ears.
