The first ever Fuzz you could buy was the Maestro Fuzz Tone. Mosrite made the second. It was am entirely different design. It was 2 Fuzz circuits in one that blended as you adjusted the depth control. 

The design had problems that made it self destruct unless getting it 

just right. It was time of trial and era. In short others were not 

interested in stealing an unreliable design when simply using the 

Fuzz Tone's topography as a starting point. Tone Benders are ALL 

a beefed up Fuzz Tone.

Ed Sanner made the first one in 1965. he did sell a few hundred 

of the 3 very different versions he made. His Fuzzrite company

soon went broke but not before Iron Butterfly put his 

pedal on the historic map.

There are many clones and a version licensed by Catalinbread

that is close. These are a big deal as ol' Ed had enough parts

to make about 40 pedals that are now on offer. I expect they 

were sold out by word of moth mouth before a video came out.

Well the obvious question you must ask 

yourself is which is the best of the clones??? LOL

The layout is dead simple. You get post and pre 

Gain controls and a volume control.

CONCLUSION ___  

First off it is a noisy pedal. You have no 

EQ just a fixed voice so you can not easily 

get it to fit with your rig. It does have some 

tone to it and it is fat and aggressive.

The only thing you need to know is the FF is best known for 

using germanium transistors and the Muff is famous for putting 

silicon transistors into 99% of all new Fuzz pedals made. 

There are many good Fuzz pedals with extra bells and whistles 

to voice a silicon pedal to sound exceptionally germanium like. 

Germanium are very grainy and as fuzzy as the name implies. 

Silicon border on a high gain OD/distortion kind of sound.

Great fun !!! What's' not to love. Readers will know I use a 

few of these pedals including the winner.

My favorite in this competition is the Tone City Matcha Cream. 

I have heard it before but reviewers treated it as a real 

Big Muff meaning using it on tunes that in the past one 

would  dial in a more Overdrive like sound. As a real Muff 

like pedal it really is poor but as a tight bass heavy

Doom sound it is excellent. It has a nice tight

sound that could even tuck under a vocal

happening with it.

A company famous for their overkill high spec. It started off with the 

Blues Breaker topography but added more of anything and everything.

The layout tells the story You get the obvious Gain, Tone and Level. Added is a toggle to add 2 more clipping diodes or to bypass any. Another toggle gives you 3 choices of a push in the Lows, Low Mids or High Mids. The Boost and its Level is a clean boost at the output that kinds your sound but just increases the output.

CONCLUSION ___

If I spend near $500 I want something special. This not that. Add to that 

one buys a Blues Breaker for it's simple near transparent low to barely 

some Crunch gain. You can get a very passable BB cheap and ones 

equal or in my opinion better for about half. WTF!!! As just an OD 

it sounds good. I would never guess it was a BB if I wasn't told. 

So as such is it the best semi-transparent pedal out there ???

Not too hard to figure out. We have yet another Ibanez TS808.

This effort starts with the original OpAmp. Then a peek into the Vermuran effort for a bit if thieving The layout has Gain, Level, Bass, Treble and Saturation/compression. Two toggles lets you choose either symmetrical or asymmetrical clipping.

CONCLUSION ___

It is apparently John Meyers choice of ts. Mind you 

John changes gear as often as the weather sooo ...

A small company from New Zealand  that started in 2003. They were probably one of the first to make pedals totally to the delight of the early Cork Sniffers. They had character and dare I say personality. The Seven  Sisters were a line of smaller pedals introduced in 2011 that could use

the usual 9v adapters but could run for 4 hours from a lithium ion battery. 

They are discontinued but a few new ones are left in stores. 

The Ivy is a take on the sound we heard on early Slayer and Metallica recordings. The voice is fixed so we get a layout of Volume and Gain.

CONCLUSION ___

It is hard not to love its simplicity and 

raw organic sound. The price is very fair.

A simple idea but how does one make it work. Apparently one puts both a Rat sound and a clean boost paired (not stacked) into a Blend so you can pick either or a blend of the two then into a Boss HM2 EQ.

The layout is Gain, Bite, which are highs, Low, bass of course and then High, a mid, treble filter, Blend to do just that with boosted cleans 

and a Rat voice. Volume as per expected. 

 

CONCLUSION___

Impressive!!! A very massive Metal OD that can

cover many Metal genres with either a basic 

voice or a change there of,😟yes?

About 12 years ago chips to make a great sounding full featured Digital Delay with big ambient sounds became not cheap but affordable. In that time we have seen 3 generations of chips go by. This means those old chips are available dead cheap for budget pedals. So we now have, even if arguably 

it is the new minimum entry level, full featured Pro sounds for $35.00 USD. 

CONCLUSION ___ 

Do not confuse this pedal with the   

M-VAVE Mini Universe. The sounds 

in it were very poor. I expect the pedal 

itself is the same but the alogirisms 

for the software have drastically 

improved. More than just usable and 

if you are not into Star-Wars ambient  

music or Shoegaze it has more than you need.  

It has both an Analog and a Tape Echo so those

alone are perfect for what an average audience calls a tune.

A new company from Ireland which appears to sell just this one pedal. The pedal in general is Brit like but it is approached with it acting as an extra channel for the pre in your amp.

The layout is Gain, Tone, Presence and Level. A toggle allows for Pre Gain boost. Another Focus for high boost and Tight is a high pass filter to tighten the lows. The final toggle switches in a post gain boost.

CONCLUSION ___

It has an impressive dead on amp like high gain sound, nothing Fuzz like or fizzy. That said I find the naming and over-hyped presentation total pretentious and unnecessary. 

It is also annoyingly confusing by not using a tried and true Bass, Mids and Treble EQ layout. For a handmade pedal with quality parts it is good value.
