The first available Fuzz was the Maestro Fuzz Tone first offered in 1962. It was put on the map when Keith Richards used it on the Stones tune Satisfaction.
It was followed by the Sola Sound Tone Bender that by adding another transistor increased the sustain. 
It was a huge success and a 'Must Have' pedal.
Very quickly many slightly modified clones showed up some were successful by creating interesting variations in tone. Hornby Skewes Zonk Machine was bit more rough raspy and aggressive than the others.

The Horn Skewer is an excellent recreation of this pedal. In my youth I bought a Fuzz Tone.

 I got it from a Country player who got it free when he bought a new Gibson Amp. Gibson owned Maestro which was marketing failure at the time so getting a few out there and depleting excess stock seemed like a good idea.
That Country player was happy to take $10.00 for it. LOL
Pro players in general thought it was an expensive toy and a 
gimmick. That all changed when the cool store at that time brought in the Zonk which quickly became a 'Must Have'.

The Creepy Fingers pedal has modified the circuit by making a hybrid circuit adding a Silicon transistor to help stabilize the wild sputtering sound of the original design that used only germanium transistors.

CONCLUSION
You either love it or hate it. There are arguably better choices 
if your thing is either a Fuzz that is used for an OD or a fuzz that 
is so out of control it nearly a special effect noise making toy.
This Fuzz is right in the middle between the extremes.
