These are getting popular. A Sunn Model T amp-in-a- Box. The Doom and Stoner and Death Metal guys put the amp on the map when they created these genres. It was all about getting a loud cheap bass heavy amp. The standard deal was to push them with a ProCo Rat II pedal. So because of this many of the pedals build a Rat substitute into the circuit as a boost. 

The layout is Volume, Gain and Tone with a toggle for Mode another for EQ. Both are used to change voicings without killing the heavy lows or the biting highs.

also make a fully loaded  job with knobs to dial in 

the Rat sound you want. It is more accurate to 

buy buy a real $80.00 ProCo  Rat II.
