It is a 20th Anniversary pedal. MXR have been re-releasing a lot lately. This is not the ZW-44 but a new pedal the WA-44.
My grapevine tells me MXR has a new factory outfitted with high tech machinery. It drops production costs big time. It allows for even limited runs to be done with a fast turn around rate. In short Ralf the Robot is making you a pedal. This makes bringing back old pedals a low risk because if the sales suck they can go to a computer and press 'NEXT'.
Get over the pixie dust myth, what makes a good pedal is math. Tell the machine what you want and you get it. Of course if you ask for dumb sh@t ..you get it, bad smell and all, lol. The layout is simple enough you get, Level, Gain and Tone.
It has a fat, chunky, grainy thick sound. It definitely old school and was designed with a stack in mind. In short it is more of a high gain booster pedal meant to go into an amp already sending out very high gain from
the start. It will probably stack well in front of MIAB. Zakk uses JCM 800's.
If you are a pedal board into a clean amp guy it is a Must Do.
UPDATE: Kerry King of Slayer now uses this as his go-to OD
