BROWN SOUND
Way back in before Noah got off the ark if you wanted a cheap pedal it was matter of DIY. From that group guys like Brian Wampler and Josh Scott of JHS emerged.
Two guys that were big in that DIY world were Jack Oran and Aron Nelson who both
came up with a schematic they shared that others called a brown sound in a box or a BSIAB. They were good but a bit bug ridden and noisy. Along came Ed Guidry who took both, discovered the best of and came up with the BSIA2. The 2 was killer!!!
Still a bit too noisy but killer all the same.Soon our hero way over in Melbourne Australia Darron Thornbury came along and tracing the steps of Scott and Brian went pro after his stint in the DIY world.
He always felt a pedal needed the best parts not the budget parts of the DIY world
or even the robust but poor sounding parts of the big manufacturers.So the name of the pedal is just a bit of honesty from its source as well as a bit of tongue in cheek humor. In short it has zero to do with EVH or indeed his tone or a embarrassingly childish marketing idea.What I have always liked about this pedal is that most makers do not try to get the sound of a Marshall in trashy practice room or small club with bad acoustics they go for the sound on a recording with a half million dollars of processing between the amp in the room and the amp on the recording. What you hear is what I here every day from my PLEXI.The layout is a dead simple volume, tone and gain. The sound is all but fixed.

Darron is literally famous for his level of quality. Best parts and in this case NOS Fairchild 5457 FETS. It has a 10 year warranty. You only have that if you know you will nearly never need to honor it, lol. Free shipping too. The sound is open and not overly compressed. You get the kind of definition that only the best gourmet transparent pedals have.
HANDS ON ...I just got it. I would say it has just a bit less sustain than I thought. The big surprise it is killer fat. Like really full and open but not a bit muddy. At the same time it is tight. The two together are unusual. Definitely a keeper!!!
The Dazatronyx optical tremolo sounds great too!
ReplyDeleteAll of Darrons pedals are impressive. I use the Axcess/ Giannini TR-17 Tremolo. It does just one thing well and that is very good take on the Fender amp trem. thing. Great for dead clean amp flat picking sounds. I do not use Trem very much so at $35.00 USD it is ideal. A lot of pricy but impressive pedals are full of great features and dramatic sounds. BIG BUT, once you get them not a single one of those crazy sounds works with a single tune that you know or play. The truth is you are improbable to play tunes that need this stuff but you can pay a fortune buying pedals with it in. My buddy bought the Critics Choice new Keeley Andy Timmons Halo, $300.00 USD delay pedal. He ended up only using the pre-set slap back single repeat in his band. WTF! I have a Mighty Sound M5 $25.00 USD analog delay. This delay is crap for nice echoes but for a slap back it is killer. Extra fat and it does extra short thing on its delay time.
ReplyDeleteSome pedals like a MIAB literary become your whole sound. Think of them like an oil painting by a famous artist. A Delay pedal is like a frame around that picture. If used that way it highlights the picture. If you use a a huge dramatic sound on a delay, the delay becomes not the frame but part or even all of the picture. When ever I buy a Reverb, Delay or modulation pedal I always think of that first. I seldom buy anything that is not a frame.
