BENSON AMPS GERMANIUM FUZZ
Germanium transistors are a nightmare.
They sound great in a constant comfortable room temperature but can become erratic or even turn off if the temperature is too hot or too cold.
The signal will literally feedback in short head back to the input if they get more signal than they can process.
A Lot of the drawbacks can be used to make some cool and musical noises along with a usable signal but... the problem is some old style Fuzz pedals are virtually unusable live.
When using 2 or more germanium transistors they must be matched in output to function or have a good sound.
They also can leak. So everyone must be tested and checked over by hand. Benson heats the transistors to constant temperature. They control the range of the input so changing the level of the guitars volume is never too little or much but always in the sweet spot.
CONCLUSION
This all comes at a cost. The pedal definitely has a great sound.
BUT! The King of all Fuzz pedals the ToneBender is being reproduced in the soon to be released as the BOSS Waza Craft TB-2W Fuzz. It too has solved all the problems
yet worked with Gary Hurst of the Macari Brothers down to the lint pick level to get a blindfold proof sonic clone. At $375.00 USD it is not a steal.
The point is if the Tonebender were a car it would be a Ferrari so unless you do not like
the Ferrari you should wait before grabbing up a Benson.
