BEHRINGER UMC22 AUDIO INTERFACE
The speed of high tech has gone from very, very fast to warp speed! This simple interface has one line in and one mic in. The mic goes to a Midas preamp. The original Midas mic pre was a couple of thousand.
You can use free software like Ableton Live. A good 80 % of most recordings in anyone's collection was recorded on equipment with much, much lower specs. YES!You read this right!
In short one good mic and some reasonable patience and any guitarist can produce a world class recording.
Everyone has personal expectations so I will argue what minimal extras one feels are necessary.
Let me put it this way. If you presented me with 10 guitar sounds and I chose number 8 and you said this rig can only give me number 5 ...I can live with it. So my argument is there is a number 5 in this rig for bass, vocals, percussion etc. etc.
It is all about recording one thing at a time using acceptable but free software to assist in a finished stereo recording that sounds comparable to anything on offer by others using a full studio.
CONCLUSION
Behringer have a rep of making junk.
Absolutely YES.
Absolutely No.
They have for years made crap but it was dead cheap and made for hobbyists NOT pros.
At the same time they had a monopoly with high tech medium priced Pro stuff mainly Synthesizers that were aimed at exploring sound. Their biggest customers were universities. Stuff designed by educated engineers. This product came from this dept. What you are paying for is killer firmware/software. Yes it is in a plastic box but it isn't going in an old milk carton with mic stands sitting on it to the gig. The chips are of a high quality and it was made with the computer assisted machines that made your Apple cell phone.
Finally as one guy told me. He said you could not rent anything this good for $50 for 3 months. If it died before that you are under warranty. Secondly considering it will get zero abuse the average modern electronics are good for 3 years minimum.
You will want the 'bigger better' by then.
